CROSS-CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY: A PRACTICE-BASED FRAMEWORK FOR ADAPTIVE FURNITURE AND LIGHTING
Cross-Cultural Sustainability is presented as a practice-based framework developed through professional furniture, lighting and communication design. It explores how furniture and lighting can become adaptable carriers of identity, allowing preferences to evolve across regions and continents through renewal and cultural adaptation rather than replacement.
The framework uses surface, textile, image, material origin, mathematical variation, narrative, spatial and material communication, and user participation to extend product life, support sustainable material choices and reduce material consumption. The object remains coherent as its identity evolves.
The projects explore multi-aesthetic design: systems that hold several identities rather than one fixed expression. Interior objects already communicate identity through material, colour, pattern and style; in a visual culture shaped by clothing, social media and individual expression, this framework makes identity flexible, renewable and culturally adaptable. Adaptation is multi-level: individual choice, time-specific expression, regional material availability and continental cultural contexts. Mathematical logic creates outcomes from limited elements.
It is explored through four projects: Powderbox, Fabricated, ZERO WASTE - Reshore, and Piles of Fabric. Each investigates combinatorial furniture, layered lighting, Circular Surface Variation and domestic textile renewal. Changeable elements can be updated through textile traditions, user-supplied material, creative input and material availability across personal, regional and continental contexts.
Powderbox is an interactive chair and stool system based on interchangeable cushions. Thirty loose, reversible cushions generate 1,740 visual pairings within one structure. Closed, it functions as a stackable stool; opened, it becomes a chair. The cushions are replaceable, and their covers can be adjusted according to preference, context or cultural setting. Because surplus fabrics are variable and limited, they support updating over time with material availability and cultural setting. As a next step, sorted recycled plastic sheets are considered for the structural body, where waste-stream fragments can carry a narrative of origin and transformation.
Fabricated applies the framework to lighting through translucent printed textile bands around an illuminated cylindrical core. The core and bands can vary in length, proportion and arrangement. The bands can carry one coherent visual artwork or combine styles, patterns, colours or creative input. Through layering and overlap, image, colour, depth and atmosphere shift through light, distance, arrangement and on/off states, while the cylindrical structure maintains identity. Instead of replacing the lamp, the bands can be exchanged, recombined, renewed or recycled after replacement. Creative or user-supplied visual material and print forms add adaptation across cultural contexts.
ZERO WASTE - Reshore extends the framework toward material communication and reshore production. It connects manufacturing to local waste streams, so each edition can be shaped by materials available where it is produced. It explores Circular Surface Variation through recycled plastics, organic fibres, surplus textiles and local waste streams. Ten reversible cushions generate 1,024 surface configurations in one chair system. Regional waste streams give each edition a distinct material and cultural identity, making sustainability tangible by connecting fragments, remnants, fibres and colour variations to place. Title, material origin, surface variation and interchangeable cushions communicate waste reduction through use.
Piles of Fabric - Reducing fabric waste, one pile at a time - is included as an emerging text-based design direction in textile renewal and material communication. It places fabric leftovers at the centre, allowing textile waste to inform the shell, surface and material narrative. Upholstered chairs are often discarded because renewal is costly or inaccessible. Users can update textile elements with personal or local fabric waste and combine fabrics, turning renewal into use and communication.
